International Museum Day is celebrated on May 18 and was initiated and created by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977. In 1977, in order to promote the healthy development of the global museum industry and attract the understanding, participation and attention of the whole society to the museum industry, the International Museum Association proclaimed May 18, 1977 to the world as the first International Museum Day, and determined the theme for the International Museum Day every year.
